How Medicare Insurance Works
Coverage Details
Medicare is divided into several "Parts," each offering specific coverage. Understanding the different Parts is essential for selecting the right plan for you.
- Medicare Part A (Hospital Insurance): Covers inpatient hospital stays, skilled nursing facility care, hospice care, and some home health services.
- Medicare Part B (Medical Insurance): Covers doctor visits, outpatient care, medical supplies, and preventive services.
- Medicare Part D (Prescription Drug Coverage): Helps cover the costs of prescription medications.
In addition to these core Parts, there is Medicare Part C (Medicare Advantage), an all-in-one alternative that bundles Part A, Part B, and often Part D coverage, with additional benefits like dental and vision care. Medicare Advantage plans are offered by private insurers approved by Medicare.
To bridge the gaps in Original Medicare, many people opt for Medicare Supplement Plans (Medigap). These policies help cover out-of-pocket costs like copayments, coinsurance, and deductibles that Medicare alone doesn't cover.
How It's different from Other Health Insurance
Medicare differs from traditional health insurance in that it’s a federal program with predefined parts, each providing different levels of coverage. Medicare Advantage (Part C) offers additional benefits not found in Original Medicare, while Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plans help cover gaps left by Medicare Parts A and B. Medigap plans do not replace Medicare but work alongside it to reduce your out-of-pocket expenses.
Scenario: John, a 68-year-old retiree, is enrolled in Original Medicare (Parts A and B). He was recently hospitalized for surgery and faced unexpected copayments and coinsurance costs that weren’t fully covered by Medicare. John reached out to his Loman-Ray agent, who helped him secure a Medicare Supplement Plan to cover these gaps. In addition, they added Part D Prescription Drug Coverage to ensure his medications were fully covered moving forward.
Outcome: John now has complete healthcare protection with Medicare and his Medigap plan. He’s no longer worried about unexpected expenses from hospital stays or prescriptions. Plus, the assistance he received from his Loman-Ray agent didn’t cost him any more than it would have if he had navigated the system alone.
Optional Add-Ons for Medicare
In addition to the standard Medicare Parts, you can enhance your coverage with Medicare Supplement Plans (Medigap). Medigap plans help pay for out-of-pocket costs that Original Medicare doesn’t cover, like copayments, coinsurance, and deductibles. There are ten standardized Medigap plans (A, B, C, D, F, G, K, L, M, N), each offering different levels of coverage. These plans are sold by private insurers and can be paired with Original Medicare (Parts A and B).
